DSEI UK 2027: The Hampshire-to-ExCeL Roadshow Brief
“Forty-two miles, and none of them are the problem.” DSEI UK returns to ExCeL London on 7–10 September 2027 with 45,000+ attendees, 1,600+ exhibitors, 3,300+ global VIPs and delegations and 460+ starred officers from more than 90 countries. It is the largest single ground-transport event in the British defence calendar — and the last mile at Royal Victoria Dock defeats more schedules than the M3 ever will.

DSEI UK 2027 in numbers, and what they mean for traffic
DSEI is the UK’s flagship defence event and the organisers publish the scale plainly: 45,000+ attendees, 1,600+ exhibitors, 3,300+ global VIPs and delegations, 460+ starred officers and more than 90 countries represented.
Take one of those figures seriously and the rest follows. 3,300 VIPs and delegations is the number that matters to us. Those are not people who arrive on the DLR. They arrive in cars, in convoys, in groups of four to nine, with fixed bilateral times and a host walking them from the kerb. Layer 460 starred officers on top and you have a four-day period where the approach roads to Royal Victoria Dock carry a volume of chauffeured movement that no other UK exhibition generates.
The programme spreads across zones — aerospace, land, naval, space, cyber and tech, manufacturing, medical and the international pavilions — plus waterborne demonstrations, a land static display and visiting warships in the dock. Practically that means the site is much larger than the halls, and the walk from the kerb to a specific zone is not trivial.
The last mile: why ExCeL breaks schedules
Farnborough to ExCeL is roughly 42 miles. On a clear Sunday it is a comfortable hour and a quarter. During DSEI week, in the 07:00–09:00 band, that same journey routinely takes well over two hours, and almost none of the additional time is spent on the motorway.
The delay is concentrated in the final three miles, for structural reasons:
- Royal Victoria Dock is a peninsula. The approach options are limited and there is no useful alternative route once you are committed.
- Car park access is A13 only. There is no vehicle access to the ExCeL car park from Western Gateway or Seagull Lane. A driver who does not know this loses fifteen minutes discovering it.
- Every drop-off funnels to one point. The west taxi rank is the only sanctioned drop-off and pick-up location for the venue.
- Blackwall and Silvertown are the river. If either tunnel backs up, southern and central approaches back up with it.
The lesson we have learned running into this venue is unglamorous: the fix is departure time and route knowledge, not horsepower. There is no clever way through Silvertown at 08:20 on a DSEI Tuesday.
The A13 rule, the west taxi rank and the height limit
ExCeL publishes its access rules clearly and they are worth reading before you brief any driver:
| Rule | Detail | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Car park accessA13 only | No access from Western Gateway or Seagull Lane. From central London or the south via Blackwall Tunnel, use the A13 and turn off at the A112 junction, taking Tollgate Road southbound. | Brief the driver on the approach, not just the postcode |
| Drop-off and pick-upWest taxi rank | All drop-offs and pick-ups are at the west taxi rank only, postcode E16 1XL. | Agree this as the meeting point in advance, every time |
| Vehicle height1.9 m standard | The venue car park permits vehicles up to 1.9 m, with a limited number of over-height spaces up to 2.8 m. | Check before sending a large MPV or minibus in to park |
| Coaches and minibusesPre-book only | Coach and minibus parking is allocated only to pre-booked vehicles, charged at a flat rate of £50.00 per day. | Book the space when you book the group, not on the day |
| Car parkingPre-book, subject to availability | Parking space is to be pre-booked and is subject to availability. | Do not assume a space exists on a DSEI morning |
Two of those deserve emphasis. The height limit catches people out: a long-wheelbase executive MPV or an eight-seater sits close to that 1.9 m line, and an executive minibus is comfortably over it. It is a good reason to drop rather than park. The west taxi rank is also, in ExCeL’s own words, close to residential properties and a nursery, and drivers are asked to switch engines off and not idle even while queueing. During busy periods the traffic team and concierge marshal the flow and drivers are expected to comply.
Our practice at ExCeL is therefore fixed: drop at the west rank, leave immediately, stand off-site, and return only when the passenger calls. It is better for the neighbours, better for the marshals and — because nobody is paying for a car to idle in a queue — better for you.
Worth noting for context: ExCeL has its own appointed executive travel partner listed on its visitor pages. We are not it, and we do not pretend to be. What we offer is different — a door-to-door service that starts at your hotel or office in Hampshire, Surrey or Berkshire and stays with you all day, rather than a London-based ride booked leg by leg.
Tunnels, tolls and emissions zones
Since April 2025 the Silvertown Tunnel has provided additional cross-river access to ExCeL from the Greenwich Peninsula. Both Silvertown and Blackwall now carry tolls, and ExCeL directs visitors to Transport for London for current charges.
ExCeL also sits inside the London-wide Ultra Low Emission Zone. Charges, exemptions and tunnel tolls change more often than most travel guides get updated, so rather than print a figure here that may be wrong by 2027, we do this: we confirm every applicable charge for your specific dates and route in writing at quote stage, and it is included in the figure we give you. No surprise line items after the event.
Running DSEI from Hampshire: stay or commute?
A large share of the UK defence supply chain sits in the M3 and A34 corridor — Farnborough, Aldershot, Basingstoke, Camberley, Guildford, Fleet, Winchester and Reading. Every September that corridor has the same argument: do we take rooms in the Docklands, or commute?
There is no universal answer, but there is a decision framework we have watched work:
| Your situation | What usually works | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Exhibiting all four daysStand team of 4–10 | Rooms near the venue, plus one vehicle on standby | Four commutes at DSEI peak costs more in lost hours than the rooms do |
| Visiting one or two daysSmall senior party | Same-day return from Hampshire, early departure | Avoids Docklands room rates in DSEI week; a 06:15 departure clears the worst of it |
| Hosting an inbound delegationAirport arrival, multi-stop | London base, dedicated vehicle and driver for the run | Delegations rarely stay put; the vehicle is the schedule, not a taxi |
For the same-day option, the number that matters is not the mileage. It is the departure time. A 06:15 pull-away from Farnborough is a different journey from an 07:30 one, and we will say so at booking rather than agree to a time we do not believe in.
The roadshow pattern: ExCeL is never the only stop
Almost no serious DSEI programme happens entirely at ExCeL. The pattern we carry, year after year, looks like this: morning at the stand, a midday move to a Whitehall or Ministry of Defence meeting, an afternoon back at the halls, then an evening reception in Mayfair, the City or on the water at Royal Victoria Dock. Somewhere in there, someone has to reach Heathrow for a 19:40 departure.
That is a roadshow, not a transfer. It has a shape:
One vehicle, one driver, one day
The car is assigned to the party for the day, not the journey. Bags stay in the boot, the driver holds the schedule, and nobody is re-booking on an app between meetings while a director waits on a pavement.
Routing built around the day, not the map
Whitehall at 12:30 and back at ExCeL by 14:15 is a different route from the same trip at 10:00. We plan each leg against the time it actually happens, including the river crossings.
A named collection point at every stop
West taxi rank at ExCeL. A specific side street in Whitehall. A named hotel entrance in Mayfair. Agreed in writing beforehand, so nobody is describing their surroundings down a phone in the rain.
Sized for the party and the cases
E-Class for two, S-Class where the arrival matters, V-Class for a delegation of up to seven, Vito eight-seater and Sprinter for larger groups and stand teams. Our full fleet is set out on the fleet page.
Driver details supplied in advance
Name, vehicle, colour and registration ahead of the first movement for security clearance and for your own guest list. No unannounced substitutions during the run.
Discretion as a working habit
Conversations in the back of the car stay there. Our drivers do not discuss passengers, destinations or itineraries, and they do not photograph vehicles with clients aboard. It should not need saying; we say it anyway.
If your programme includes an airport departure on the final day, tell us at booking. A 19:40 out of Heathrow after a 17:00 close at ExCeL is achievable, but only if the car is already positioned and the route is chosen in advance. See our Heathrow transfer page for how we handle terminal-side timing, and our fleet page for vehicle capacities with luggage.
How roadshow and delegation transport is quoted
We publish per-mile fares for ordinary journeys and we do not publish them for event, delegation or roadshow work. Not because the number is embarrassing, but because it would be meaningless. A per-mile figure prices distance. A DSEI day is priced by time held, positions covered and risk absorbed.
What actually goes into the figure:
- Hours the vehicle is committed — a 06:15 departure and a 22:00 return is a long day for a driver, and the law on driver hours is not negotiable.
- Number of stops and their geography — ExCeL to Whitehall to Mayfair to Heathrow is four positions, not one journey.
- Vehicle class and count — and whether the stand team genuinely fits one vehicle with their material.
- Standby versus release — holding a car and driver near Royal Victoria Dock all afternoon is a real cost; releasing and re-calling is cheaper but slower.
- Tolls, emissions charges and parking — Silvertown, Blackwall, ULEZ and pre-booked venue parking, all confirmed for your dates.
- Airport legs and flight tracking — inbound delegations, hold times and meet-and-greet.
You get back one inclusive figure per vehicle per day, in writing, before anything moves. Dinez Taxis and Airport Transfers is not VAT registered, so the number quoted is the number invoiced — no tax line, no fuel surcharge, no post-event reconciliation. Multi-day event programmes run comfortably on a corporate account with monthly settlement and named cost centres, which is how most of our exhibitor clients handle DSEI weeks.
One practical note on timing. September 2027 sounds distant. It is not, for this event. Docklands accommodation, coach parking allocations and dedicated-driver capacity across the whole South East all tighten early for DSEI, and the operators who still have availability in August 2027 are generally the ones you did not want.

DSEI UK 2027 travel — your questions, answered
When and where is DSEI UK 2027?
DSEI UK 2027 takes place from 7 to 10 September 2027 at ExCeL London, Royal Victoria Dock. The organisers publish 45,000+ attendees, 1,600+ exhibitors, 3,300+ global VIPs and delegations, 460+ starred officers and more than 90 countries represented.
Where do taxis and chauffeur cars drop off at ExCeL London?
All drop-offs and pick-ups take place at the west taxi rank only, postcode E16 1XL. Drivers are asked to switch engines off and not idle, as the rank sits close to residential properties and a nursery, and traffic marshals manage flow during busy periods.
How do vehicles reach the ExCeL car park?
Access to the venue car park is only via the A13. There is no access from Western Gateway or Seagull Lane. Coming from central London or the south through the Blackwall Tunnel, use the A13 and turn off at the A112 junction onto Tollgate Road southbound.
Is there a height limit for vehicles at ExCeL?
Yes. The venue car park permits vehicles up to 1.9 metres, with a limited number of over-height spaces up to 2.8 metres. Larger MPVs and executive minibuses should be planned as drop-and-return rather than park-on-site.
Can we park a coach or minibus at ExCeL for DSEI?
Only if it is pre-booked. ExCeL allocates coach and minibus parking to pre-booked vehicles, charged at a flat rate of fifty pounds per day. Book the space at the same time you book the group transport.
How long does it take to drive from Farnborough to ExCeL London?
Around 42 miles. Off-peak it is comfortably over an hour; during DSEI week in the morning peak it routinely takes more than two hours, with most of the delay in the final three miles around Royal Victoria Dock. We plan departures accordingly.
Do you charge extra for tolls, ULEZ and parking?
No. Silvertown and Blackwall tunnel tolls, London emissions charges and any pre-booked venue parking are confirmed for your dates and included in the written quote. There are no charges added after the event.
Do you publish prices for DSEI roadshow and delegation transport?
No. Per-mile pricing describes distance, not a day of standby across four positions with tolls and airport legs. We quote one inclusive figure per vehicle per day, agreed in writing before the first movement, with no VAT added because we are not VAT registered.
A last word from the yard
Hampshire and the Docklands are forty-two miles and two entirely different worlds apart. We have been driving between them for sixteen years, and DSEI week is the one period where the drive stops being a drive and becomes a plan.
Book the rooms, fix the meetings, then hand us the shape of the days. If we think a departure time will not work, we will tell you before you commit to it — which is, in the end, the whole service.
